C8 - Wendy McDonnell KS5 2019 - 2020

Mrs McDonnell

We have an exciting year ahead of us as we work towards gaining our awards and qualifications.  Students follow one of our two accreditation routes:

Route 1: students are completing Ascentis Maths and English qualifications at Entry 1 and 2 along with an ASDAN PSD qualification.

Route 2: students will work towards Ascentis Maths and English along with an ASDAN Personal Progress qualification.

The focus within English this term is reading. Within Maths we are completing a range of activities including whole numbers, number bonds and money skills.

Our theme this year is Star Wars.  We are very excited for this and are watching the films. We will complete work and activities around this.

For our work related learning, Keystage 5 are running 4 Enterprise projects.  We are continuing to run our Snack Attack tuck shop.  Students take turns to shop at Costco.  Back at school, students calculate the individual cost of the purchased items, consider sell by dates and stock rotation.  They utilise money and communication skills when taking turns to serve.  We are continuing to run our very successful cafe.  Students shop for required items, take orders, cook and serve a varied menu including, toast, crumpets, sausage butties and hot drinks.  We are continuing to run our eBay shop.  Students sell items donated to school.  They are responsible for checking items, taking photos, writing descriptions, listing items and then packaging and posting items to the succcessful bidder.  We are also creating craft items, including a number of personalised goods, look out for our order forms.

For enrichment we offer an art project, which looks at the Pop Art movement.  Students have visited The Tate, Liverpool to peruse an exhibition of Roy Lichtenstein's work.  They have recreated art in the style of the artists they are studying.  In addition we offer The John Muir Award.  This is an environmental project, exploring and discovering the wildlife, fauna and weather in and around Runcorn Hill.  Students complete work over the year including conservation projects were they have to make a difference to the environment.  At the end of the year students will be awarded a John Muir Award Certificate.
